Why Stephon Gilmore was released?
Gilmore, who was in the last year of his contract with the Patriots, hasn't played since recovering from a quad-related injury. Gilmore was due only $7 million, and there had been some disputes about the possibility of an extension or to pay Gilmore a greater amount. Gilmore was awarded Defensive Player of the Year for 2019, and Gilmore felt he deserved a pay raise.
However, Gilmore was released because the Patriots weren't keen on granting Gilmore a pay raise without having seen him in action. That's part of the reason that drove them to make the decision to release Gilmore, but it wasn't the sole factor.
