The Canadian flag in its current form was adopted on the 15th of February 1965 and it was replaced with the British flag. Since 1996, the 15th of February is celebrated annually as the national day.
The Canadian national flag consists of two red rectangles that are on both sides and a white square in between them, and an 11-pointed maple leaf in red that is centered in the white square. The flag measures twice longer than it is wide.

A variety of flags were used in Canada prior to the current National Flag. Since the very beginning of European presence on Canadian territory, flags of the European homelands, like France as well as the Netherlands, were used.
Canadian troops were deployed in Egypt in 1956 to serve as United Nations Peacekeepers to help in the Suez Crisis. The Canadian troops carried the Canadian Red Ensign, which is a combination of the Union Jack . Looking at the red colour, Egyptian observers thought that it was England's flag. This misperception helped reinforce the need for a distinct Canadian flag.
